Finland's most famous resident, Santa Claus, has been given his own gold coin. The coin was issued by Kiribati, which includes Kiritimati, known as Christmas Island. Finished with a colour print, the coin is pure gold. The print run of the coin is limited to 2500 pieces. It is a fine tribute to Finland's most famous resident!
In the run-up to Christmas, Moneta Finland and Santa Claus Licensing Ltd have created Christmas gifts of different sizes, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Santa Claus Foundation charity.
- It has been very interesting to be involved in the design process and to see how a good idea slowly evolves into a finished, beautiful money. The Christmas money will help us create a new dimension to Christmas while doing a lot of good together with Finnish Moneta, Petri Paarnio, Director of Santa Claus Licensing Oy, says.
The Christmas Island, part of the island nation of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean, is where the Christmas money is to be won.
- This is funny money. Christmas Island is on the exact opposite side of the globe from Christmas Land, where Santa Claus lives. It feels nice to publish money in a place where it's Christmas all year round, Janne Häkkinen, Country Director of Finnish Moneta, is delighted.
There are three different sizes of gold coin and a silver-plated copper-nickel coin to celebrate Christmas.
The smallest gold coin has the Santa Claus Foundation emblem in colour. The two largest gold coins have the Santa Claus Foundation emblem in full colour on the reverse, with a winter forest landscape and a reindeer in the foreground. The snowdrop on both coins is decorated with diamond dust.
The silver-plated commemorative coin features a winter forest landscape, a cottage and two children admiring Santa's sleigh and reindeer flying in the sky.
There is also a shooting star in the sky, and the Santa Claus Foundation's coloured emblem can be found on the right-hand side of the picture. The text "Merry Christmas" appears on all the coins in Finnish, Swedish and English, and the year of minting for all the coins is 2016.
