The Finnish Santa Claus is known throughout Finland and in many other countries
In the Finnish tradition, Santa Claus comes from the Korvatunturi in Lapland, where he lives in the snow with reindeer and elves. The tradition is kept alive, especially by parents telling their children about Santa Claus, but also by the media telling about the traditions of Christmas celebrations. The emphasis on kindness and goodwill is strongly associated with the Finnish tradition of Santa Claus. According to the expert panel, this tradition is strong and is passed on through family Christmas traditions, in which Santa Claus plays a central role.
- The Finnish Santa Claus and the family traditions associated with him are so close and familiar to us Finns that they are not always considered part of our national cultural heritage. It is so valuable and wonderful that we could well take it much further abroad. There is always a demand for kindness, helping others and good cheer, says the Santa Claus Foundation's agent Jari Ahjoharju.
The only real Santa Claus a major part of Finland's tourism marketing
Marketing Director, Visit Finland Heli Jimenez Finprolta considers the adoption of the Santa Claus tradition to be a significant step forward and believes it will strengthen Santa's role as the only true Santa Claus in the world.
- Santa Claus and the story of the character as an ambassador of goodwill is generating huge interest and childlike delight around the world. Santa Claus is one of the most important elements in Finland's tourism marketing and it is vital that the positive images associated with Santa Claus are associated with Finland," says Jimenez.
Visit Finland, the Santa Claus Foundation and Santa Claus operators, mainly in Rovaniemi, have been working closely together for years. Santa Claus is Finland's best-known brand and has been used to promote Finnish tourism, especially in Asia, especially in China, but also in Russia, Europe and the USA. Joulupukki has always played an important role in marketing Lapland. Finnair, Finavia and TallinkSilja have also actively used the Finnish Santa Claus tradition in their marketing.
Santa Claus on UNESCO's International Heritage List
Next year, the Ministry of Education and Culture will decide which national cultural heritage sites to nominate to the international heritage list maintained by UNESCO. Ahjoharju hopes that Finland's nominee will be the Finnish Santa Claus tradition. In addition to intangible cultural heritage, Unesco lists World Heritage sites that are considered to be of value, including Suomenlinna, Old Rauma and the Kvarken archipelago.
