Simulating winter in a theme park
Finnish Santa Claus Licensing Oy has signed a multi-million euro cooperation agreement with the Chinese Hangzhou Xintiandi Group. The aim of the cooperation is to build the world's first open-air theme park licensed by the Santa Claus Foundation in Hangzhou, China.
Construction of the Santa Claus theme park in Hangzhou will start in 2018 and is scheduled to open to the public in 2021.The theme park will cover 23 hectares and will be a completely new type of theme park. Visitors are expected not only from Asia but also from all over the world.
The aim is to offer Finnish experiences, know-how and technology
The project is driven by Chinese consumer demand for experiential tourism. The cooperation started in spring 2017 when FinC Trade Platform, a Finnish consultancy, discussed cooperation opportunities with Hangzhou Xintiandi Group (XTD). At the time, XTD was looking to import valuable foreign intangible rights into China. When FinC Trade Platform described the Finnish Santa Claus and related branding to them, interest was piqued.
Finland and Santa Claus are in the Chinese consumer's mind, so a Santa Claus branded theme park is an excellent response to China's tourism needs. The project is unique in every respect, as there is no similar project in the world.
The final value of the project is based not only on the IPR rights of the Santa Claus brand, but also on the final implementation of the theme park.
“We want to offer Finnish expertise and technology for the implementation of the theme park. The theme park is planned to simulate winter with various snow and ice elements, which would be a huge experience, especially for Chinese tourists,” says Santa Claus Licensing.
Theme park increases interest in Finnish tourism and Finnish products
Since 2013, Santa Claus Licensing has been working on licensing Santa Claus products and services. Santa Claus has already partnered with more than 100 companies (e.g. Arabia, Finavia, Finnair, Veikkaus, Alfmix, Sheraton, VR, Posti, Suomen Moneta). Through Santa Claus branded products, the theme park will give Finnish companies global visibility and a new sales channel for their products. The cooperation will influence the image of Finland in China and create a significant Finnish footprint.
“We believe that the theme park will also increase the demand for Finnish tourism and promote Finnish Santa Claus and Finland as his home country,” says Santa Claus Licensing, assessing the overall project.
