As the bus speeds towards the seaside and the scent of the forest fills the open windows, many Ukrainian children experience something they haven’t felt in a long time: a moment when they don’t have to be afraid. A moment when they can just be a child.
This moment is possible when the European tourism sector – with Finland strongly involved – has decided to join forces and build summer holiday packages for children for the third year now, where children can experience the security, joy and normal everyday life that the war has taken away from them.
Finland is involved in building brighter memories
In 2026, the European tourism industry will organize two summer camps for a total of 100 Ukrainian children. The first camp will be held in Sweden and Finland in the week before and after Midsummer, and the second camp will be held in Latvia in late summer.
– Finland’s role is special. We have nature that calms us down. We have a safe environment that gives children the opportunity to breathe deeply. And we have the tourism industry that wants to give its time and resources to the benefit of children, says Heli Mäki-Fränti, Managing Director of the Finnish Tourism Association (SMAL), which coordinates arrangements in Finland.

Numerous companies in Finland and elsewhere in Europe offer accommodation, meals, transportation, and activities without charge. The following organizations are involved in making the summer camp in Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa on June 22-24, 2026 possible: The Santa Claus Foundation, Delicatessen, Fazer Visitor Center, Haltia Lake Lodge, Hesburger, Home Hotel Katajanokka/Strawberry, HTE-Tours, Kanresta, Kon-Tiki Tours, Olympia Travel Agency, PATA Finland Chapter, Scandic Hotels, Stromma Suomi, Summer Camp Finland, Finnish Nature Center Haltia, Tallink Silja, Event Hall Bank/NoHo Partners, Heureka Science Center, and Viking Line. Helsingin Seudun Liikenne, Lidl, Solvalla and Retkipaikka are also supporting the implementation of the summer camp.
Why is this work meaningful?
Children raised in Ukraine have lived for years in a state of uncertainty. Many have had to leave their homes, many live apart from their parents, and some of the parents are on the front line. Their childhood has been filled with sounds and emotions that no child should be allowed to learn to recognize.
Summer camp cannot change the past, but it can give something irreplaceable right now: a safe environment, laughter, friendship, and the feeling that there is still room for joy in life.
A reliable and transparent project
The project is led by European tourism organizations together New Hope Travel Industry Children’s Fund with one that has been approved by the Swedish Fundraising Supervision Board. The organizers and coordinators are in Finland SMAL, In Sweden SRF, In Latvia ALTA as well as in all the locations in Ukraine AITO and European umbrella organization ECTAA.
